Gavin and Chucky (Group)

Gavin & Chucky have been playing music together since 2015 – when they were spontaneously paired up by Deodat ‘Uncle Deo’ Persaud at the Rupununi Music and Arts Festival which was held at Rock View Lodge, Annai. Since then, the two have developed a chemistry that is undeniably contagious, and rich with Passion and Culture.

With their slogan ‘Folk It Up’ – the duo have one main mission – to reintroduce Folk Music and Culture back into society, which has become overrun with foreign beliefs of what Guyanese Society should be, by performing in as many public spaces as possible. While society evolves over time, especially with foreign influences, Gavin and Chucky believe that it is most important to always maintain and preserve true Guyanese Identity.

Gavin and Chucky released their first album together in 2019, ‘Folk It Up Vol. 1’, which is a collection of Guyanese Folk Songs. This was the first of five volumes. The album was recorded and produced by Kross Kolor Records. In 2022 they released Vol. 2 and in 2023 they journeyed into the heart of the Iwokrama Rainforest to record Volumes 3 & 4. Gavin has since promoted their work on tour in NYC, China and Trinidad, the US at Folk Alliance International and at Full Sail University in Orlando, Dubai Expo 2020 and Your Roots Are Showing 2024 in Ireland.

Over the past few years the duo performed countless times all over Georgetown and at many prestigious events, and in April 2020 were scheduled for the first international appearance at the New Fire Festival in Trinidad. The pandemic has truly affected their mission of performing in as many public spaces as possible but the two refuse to be slowed down – as they have performer for as well as produced multiple virtual performances, all while writing new original music. Gavin and Chucky released their second album – Folk it Up Vol. 2 – in December 2022.

The duo have kept their spirits alive throughout the pandemic with their music by performing for a few international and local virtual festivals – such as Muzikstan Online; the National Independence Day Festival; ‘Folk Up Yuh Christmas with Gavin & Chucky’; Bankra Caribbean Culture Festival Online; Rupununi Music & Arts Festival. In 2021 the duo completed an expedition in the Rupununi where they filmed a concert series at Iwokrama, Atta Lodge and Rock View Lodge.

In March 2023 Gavin and Chucky performed internationally for the first time together at the Bridgetown International Arts Festival in Barbados. In April 2023, the duo recorded Folk It Up Vol. 3 live in the Iwokrama Rainforest – promoting cultural preservation as well as rainforest conversation. This album was released via CD in 2023 and a digital version was released in March 2024. Volume 4 is now in production and will be released later in 2024.

In 2023 the duo were awarded with the prestigious ‘Derry Etkins Memorial Prize for Service and Commitment to Music Education in Guyana’ by the Guyana Cultural Association of New York.
