Lisa Thompson, an Essequibo-born Guyanese has been living art all her life. Lisa – Adventure born and bred – spent the last two decades unravelling the sheer beauty and intricacies of mosaic, batik, tie-dyeing, and now pottery.
Thompson became involved in mosaic art early in her working career despite (or arguably because of) the hectic schedule. Diligent, detail-oriented, and determined – Lisa moved to exhibit her mosaic work under the title, ‘A Little Bit of Mauby’ and subsequently staged a second exhibition, ‘It’s all about Music and Lights’ where she featured a mix of mosaic table tops and stained glass, both at the Hadfield Gallery.
Lisa has spent her days providing her social work and public health skills to local and international organisations like Help and Shelter, UNICEF, Justice Education Society, and USAID. Art, for the most part, remained a hobby – a quiet she enjoyed in between life as a professional and mother.
Pottery is the love she found during the long days of the COVID-19 pandemic. Self-taught but guided, Lisa first debuted her pottery work during the 2021 Farmers’ Markets here in Georgetown. Patrons fell in love with her work, and she continued to hone her skills.
In the past two decades, potter and mosaic artist Lisa has created pieces characterised by a truly unique, lavish, and daring layering of colours and materials. Lisa’s work is an intricate representative of the vibrancy of the space around her as she draws influence from the lush colours and striking hues of Guyana’s rich flora and fauna. Her pieces are bold and colourful – a true reflection of her outlook on life as well. Her pieces each tell their own story.
Lisa Thompson – counsellor, social worker, teacher, researcher, project manager, volunteer, mother, friend – a woman of many hats but a self-taught artist stands out as one of the most distinctive and expressive potters in Guyana. Lisa Thompson’s pottery reflects Guyana in all her splendour!
